In India, performing a pooja (ritual or religious ceremony) for vehicles is a common tradition, rooted in a blend of cultural, religious, and spiritual beliefs. Here's a quick overview of what it typically involves:

Why Perform Pooja for Vehicles?

  • Seeking divine protection: To safeguard the vehicle and its occupants from accidents and harm.
  • Blessings for longevity: To ensure the vehicle runs smoothly and lasts long.
  • Auspicious beginnings: Especially for new vehicles, it marks a prosperous start.

When is Vehicle Pooja Done?

  • When a new vehicle is purchased (most common).
  • During festivals like:
    • Ayudha Puja / Dussehra – Part of the Navratri celebration, where all tools, instruments, and vehicles are worshipped.
    • Vijayadashami – Symbolizing victory and good beginnings.
    • Gudi Padwa / Ugadi / Vishu – New Year festivals in different regions.
  • Before long journeys or travels.

How is the Vehicle Pooja Performed?

  1. Cleaning the vehicle thoroughly.
  2. Decorating with:
    • Flowers (usually marigold or jasmine),
    • Garlands
    • Lemons under each wheel (to ward off evil).
    • Kumkum, turmeric, and sandalwood paste on the dashboard or bonnet.
  3. Breaking a coconut in front of the vehicle for auspiciousness.
  4. Lighting incense sticks or diyas (oil lamps).
  5. Chanting mantras or slokas, sometimes led by a priest.
  6. Offering fruits, sweets, and sometimes placing them on the dashboard briefly.

Many car showrooms in India even offer a basic free pooja service when you purchase a new vehicle. People often delay their delivery to align with an auspicious time (muhurta), based on astrology.
